Searching for fabric………

It is always hard to get a realistic photo of fabric with metallic in it. These are like a shot cotton with metallic thread woven in one direction and cotton in the other.  I am contemplating using one of them for the circles in the center of Vintage Spin blocks.

I only have fat quarters of the pastel colors and half yards of the others.  I will have to figure out how many 3″ circles I can get out of a fat quarter.

Last night I ditch quilted this piece while I watched TV for 2 hours.  I made 5 of these wonky pieces when I got home from NC and my solo show in June 2012.  I finished 2 to have in a gallery show the next spring and the 3 remaining are going to be quilted this spring.  I put facings on them instead of binding so I’ll have to go back to my post about that and see how I did it.

  1. and another one done!!! (nearly). I've been cleaning…. the sewing space… I sort of let things stack up recently. So not much in the way of stitching.

  2. If there's ANYBODY who can figure out how to get the most 3″ circles out of a quarter yard of fabric, it will be you. When I was married my husband subscribed to Scientific American magazine and I remember articles about “penny packing” problems. The goal was to prove beyond all doubt how many pennies you could arrange into a circle of a specific size. This reminds me of those.

  3. You did capture the metallic threads quite well. It shows up on my screen. Now to wait and see which one or ones you will use for the center for the spinners. I am anxious to see how you stitch them into each block. They will be tough to keep the edges in a smooth circle, I think.

Wonky pieces are a fun array of colorful strips. They couldn't be anything else but that.

  4. Love that wonky quilt. And I can't wait to see how you do the facing. I've never done it – but have three tiny tops, about 10″ x 14″ each, which have been waiting to be hand quilted, only because I haven't known how to finish them off. Double fold binding, which is the only way I know to do it, just will be too much for them, i think.
